Ellen Barone Speaker Biography

A former math teacher and self-proclaimed homebody, Ellen Barone is an unlikely wanderer. A Fulbright teaching exchange to Scotland in the early nineties and a 13-month travel sabbatical, however, introduced her to the kind of freedom that was lacking in her work and a life-altering urge to explore.

In 1998, with no qualifications other than a traveler’s eye and a knack for telling a tale, Ellen traded a successful academic career for the wild blue yonder and a new life as a travel photojournalist. From a handful of assignments to hundreds of adventures spanning the globe, she’s turned a passion for exploration into a profession with creativity and a commitment to freedom.   

The driving force behind everything she does is built around a core desire for genuine connection and lasting relationships. Whether working with small businesses or big brands, Ellen gravitates to meaningful partnerships and impactful projects that bring an authentic voice to the creation of revelatory tales and compelling imagery. 

There’s more to travel storytelling than words and pictures. For Ellen Barone, it's about igniting curiosity and exploring the ways people interact with the world. A story, after all, can transport us into the worlds and lives of its characters; allowing us to experience what they experience, feel what they feel. And isn't that what travel is all about?  

Together with her husband, Hank Barone, a young-adult, action-adventure author, Ellen is currently living and working from Latin America while she writes her first book, "I Could Live Here,” a travel memoir and meditation on the themes of home and belonging.
