Hugh Thompson Speaker Biography
Dr. Herbert Hugh Thompson is Senior Vice President, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Marketing Officer at Blue Coat Systems Inc. and an Adjunct Professor in the Computer Science Department at Columbia University in New York. Thompson is the co-author of a book on human potential and achievement, The Plateau Effect: Getting from Stuck to Success published by Penguin in 2013.
Dr. Thompson is also a world-renown expert in information security. He has co-authored three books on the topic including, How to Break Software Security: Effective Techniques for Security Testing (with Dr. James Whittaker, published by Addison-Wesley, 2003), and The Software Vulnerability Guide (with Scott Chase, published by Charles River 2005). He is also the Program Committee Chairman for RSA Conference, the world’s largest information security conference. In 2006 he was named one of the “Top 5 Most Influential Thinkers in IT Security” by SC Magazine.
He’s spent years creating methodologies and tools that help some of the world’s largest companies build demonstrably more secure systems. Dr. Thompson has delivered talks/keynotes at key conferences and Fortune 500 corporations, written industry-defining books and articles on software security, and has interacted with the press extensively. He has been interviewed by top news organizations including BBC, Bloomberg, CNN, CNBC, ABC, Fox News, CBS Evening News, MSNBC, HBO, BusinessWeek, Forbes, Associated Press, and the Washington Post. Dr. Thompson has authored more than 80 academic and industrial publications on software security and frequently writes for such industry publications as the New York Times, Scientific American, Dr. Dobbs Journal, IEEE Security & Privacy, CSO Magazine, Network World, and Forbes.
As SVP, CTO, and CMO at Blue Coat, Dr. Thompson report’s to the company’s CEO and is responsible for the company’s long-range technical direction and strategy along with worldwide marketing and leads a team of technologists, researchers and field personnel. Blue Coat Systems Inc. is the leader Business Assurance Technology market with over 1500 employees in 32 countries. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Florida Institute of Technology.
