Dr. Peter Tippett Speaker Biography
Peter Tippett is the chief medical officer for Verizon Enterprise Solutions’ health IT practice, the company’s practice group that is helping enable the rapidly evolving health care ecosystem through the pragmatic adoption of health information technology. In this capacity, he is responsible for creating Verizon’s health care strategy and developing a portfolio of solutions to help transform the delivery of patient care, better manage costs, enhance access to medical services, and provide health data privacy. Tippett also leads the Verizon Innovation Incubator, a group which helps Verizon bring to market new innovative services and technologies.
Previously, Tippett served as vice president of security and industry solutions for Verizon’s global enterprise unit, where he led a team of industry experts developing solutions for the energy and utilities, financial services, health care, and retail vertical markets, as well as the company’s portfolio of security services.
In his prior role, Peter Tippett was vice president of technology and innovation for Verizon Business. He joined Verizon in 2007 following its acquisition of managed security services leader Cybertrust.
Before Cybertrust, Peter Tippett was the chief executive officer of NCSA, then ICSA Labs, and was chairman of TruSecure, the largest private U.S. security services company. In the early 1990s, he directed the enterprise and security products group at Symantec. Prior to that, he worked in software development and is widely credited with creating the first commercial anti-virus product that later became Norton AntiVirus. Early in his IT career, as founder and chief executive officer of software company Certus International, Tippett pioneered and commercialized a string of now-common technologies, including the rescue disk and an application now known as “undo.”
Tippett recently received the U.S. Chamber’s First Leadership in Health Care Award for his work to improve transparency and reward innovation through the modernization of the exchange of health information technology. He served on the President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee (2003-2005) to guide U.S. efforts in health care IT and information security. In 2002, InfoWorld recognized Tippett as one of the 25 most influential chief technology officers. He also won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. He was the publisher of Information Security Magazine for its first six years.
Since 1998, Tippett has served as chairman of MD-IT, a rapidly growing health care information technology company.
Tippett has worked as an emergency room doctor and as a helicopter emergency physician and still carries a current California physician and surgeon license.
Tippett, a physician who is board certified in internal medicine, holds a doctorate in biochemistry and an M.D., both from Case Western Reserve University, and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Kalamazoo College.
